HERTFORDSHIRE.
S.Neele sculpt.Strand. | London Published as the Act directs May 21.st 1806, by J.Wilkes
This series of county maps were published in Encyclopaedia Londinensis; Or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature…Embellished by a most magnificent set of copper-plate engravings…Compiled, digested, and arranged, by John Wilkes… The maps are engraved by Samuel John Neele (1758-1824), a prolific engraver working from Russell Court from 1781 and 352 Strand from 1785-1824. He traded with his younger brother George Neele as “S .& G. Neele” 1826-1824 and with his son James Neele as Neele & Son 1816-1824. They are variously dated 1801 to 1828 and were based on John Cary’s 1787 series published in his New and Correct English Atlas. Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Cambridge do not appear in any surviving copies of the work but loose maps have been found. The series were not re-issued and appeared in no other publication.
Good example in neat hand colour. Uncommon.
