Publised (sic) September 20.th 1798 by J.Stockdale Piccadilly.

Published in The History of London and its environs...By the late Rev. Henry Hunter, D.D. and other gentlemen. Embellished with maps... London, John Stockdale, 1811. The work was issued in parts commencing in 1796. There was another issue in 1811 with different title attributed to John Aikin, M.D.
The map is a close copy of the Stockdale edition of John Cary's map of 1789 but with minor roads omitted.
John Stockdale (1750-1814), bookseller, publisher, stationer and auctioneer, was born in Cumberland and was a blacksmith and a valet before marrying Mary Ridgway, the sister of James Ridgeway, a London publisher, about 1773. He worked for London bookseller John Almon and set up his own business in 1781. A controversial figure, he was involved in several libel actions and was teh subject of cartoons by James Gilray and Thomas Rowlandson. He died almost bankrupt on 21 June 1814. His sons, John Joseph Stockdale (1776-1847), William James Stockdale (1783-1847), and his daughter, Mary Ridgway Stockdale (1774-1854), all became booksellers.
Folds as usual, small margins with some repairs to right edge affecting the engraved border. An uncommon and well engraved map in good hand colour.
