The Architect, Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799-1861) stonemason, artist, architect, traveller was born at Cawthorpe, near Barnsley on 6 March 1799, the sone of stonemason William Atkinson. His paintings and travels are documented in hs two books Oriental and Western Siberia... and Travels in the regions of the Upper and Lower Amoor... He was elected fellow of The Royal Geographical Society in 1858 and fellow of The Geological Society and The Ethnographic Society the following year. He was twice married: First to Rebekah Mercer in Halifax on 1 April 1819 and had three children. Second to Lucy Sherrard Findley in Moscow on 18 February 1848 and had a son Alatau Tamchiboulac born 4 November 1848. Although described as a widower in the Moscow chapel records but he was actually still married, a fact which was not known until after his death on 13 August 1861 in Lower Walmer, Kent.
