Mezzotint with etching by Charles Turner (1774-1857) of Friedrich V (1596-1632), Elector Palatine of the Rhine (1610-1623) and King of Bohemia (1619-1620). Nicknamed "The Winter King". Pictured on horseback with a battle scene in the background (Thirty Years War).
Charles Turner was an English mezzotint engraver who specialised in protraiture, his mezzotints were worked over an etched background. He was elected Mezzotint Engraver in Ordinary to His Majesty in 1812 and associate of The Royal Academy in 1828. He was exceptionally prolific, producing 921 prints of which 637 were portraits. Akthough not related to J M W Turner, he worked with him on the prints for his Liber Studorium or Book of Studies printed from 1807 to 1819.
Archival repair verso to split at top plate edge otherwise very good large engraving.
