Conrad Malte-Brun (1755-1826), born in Denmark, he became an activist and critic of the government and facing exile for breaking censorship laws, fled Denmark and settled in France in 1799. In France he quickly established himself as a leading geographer and publisher, his map publishing business continuing after his death by his son Victor Adolphe Malte-Brun (1816-1889).
