The manor, near Tring in Hertfordshire, predates the Norman conquest of 1066. This engraving by John Oliver depicts the house when owned by the Anderson family who occupied the house for four generations from 1606. It has since been rebuilt and is now an hotel.
Copper engraving drawn and engraved by John Oliver for publication in Sir Henry Chauncy's Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire was published in a single issue in 1700. The work was not reprinted in folio but was reproduced in two quarto volumes, the plates redrawn at a reduced scale on limestone and printed by lithography, in 1826.
This rare but poor example from the first edition is in later, amateur hand colour and has been pasted on heavier paper to reinforce a centrefold split resulting in some wrinkling.
