A Map of HERTFORD SHIRE
The Small English atlas was first issued in twelve weekly parts from November 1748, the first complete edition published in 1749. The maps are similar in style to the more common Badeslade & Toms Series of 1741/42 but have a list of towns below the map rather than to one side and the maps themselves consistently engraved with north to the top of the page. The early issues published by Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jefferys in 1749 and 1751 had the list of towns engraved in a somewhat random order and were re-engraved alphabetically for the issues published by Robert Sayer from 1775 to 1787 and a final re-issue by Laurie & Whittle in 1794.
This example of the Hertfordshire map is from the second state of the plate published in 1749 & 51 with the list of towns in random order and with a few revisions to place names but lacking plate number.
Archival tape repairs verso to short splits at centrefold just into map border but still a good example of a rare map in an early state. Old hand colour.
