HAMPSHIRE
Engraved by S. Hall Bury Street Bloomsbury.
Published by W. Edwrads Ave Maria Lane.
Engraved on a woodblock by Sidney Hall for publication in a weekly magazine, The Guide to Knowledege Edited by W Pinnock. The woodblock was inked with a roller without working the ink into the incised cuts thereby giving the printed result of white lines on a black ground. The method was not popular for topographic maps and this is the only series of county maps printed in this way. The maps were later re-issued priyted in a more conventional manner by lithographic transfer by Johnson in his Atlas of England in 1847 & 1863.
This example of the Hampshire map has some repairs verso to the top margin including a repair to a tear extending 3cm into the map but is very difficult to detect on the map face.
