Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803) was a pioneer of canal construction and commissioned the Bridgewater Canal built by John Gilbert and James Brindley to service his coal mines at Worsel, Lancashire. The Bridgewater Canal is regarded as the first true canal in Britain.
