THE ENVIRONS OF LONDON.
Engraved by W.Hughes.
London. G.Virtue.
Steel engraving by William Hughes (1818?-1876) published in A Complete and Universal Dictionary of the English Language by the Rev. James Barclay...London, George Virtue 1842.
Showing the newly formed Parliamentary Boroughs of City of London, Westminster, Marylebone, Finsbury, Tower Hamlets, Southwark, and Lambeth but not showing Greenwich, the 8th constituency formed in 1832. The map also shows the limit of the Two-penny post.
The map is listed in Ralph Hyde Printed Maps of Victorian London 1851-1900 [No. 15] but this is an earlier edition pre-dating the scope of Hyde's work and does not show the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. Later issues in Barclay's Dictionary do include the Great Exhibition and also additional railways.
Very good example in neat hand colour wash highlighting the Parliamentary boroughs and surrounding counties.
