Engraved by Samuel John Neele (1758-1824) for publication in An Account of Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa in the Years 1797 and 1798...by John Barrow. Cadell & Davies 1800.

Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) English geographer, linguist, writer and civil servant, accompanied Lord Macartney as private secretary to establish the government of the newly acquired colony of the Cape of Good Hope. Barrow was tasked with reconciling the Boer settlers with the native population. During his travel in the interior he recorded the wildlife and topography and made latitude and longitude readings . The map produced from his travel notes had its critics but was the most detailed map of the region in its time and was the basis for subsequent maps for the next 40 years. The map is notable for the detailed references to wildlife in the Colony and includes a note in the Riviersonerend area; Blue Antelope once in this part of the Country. The Blue Antelope or Bluebuck became extinct around this time.

Rare. A very good example in original outline colour. Some light offseting from the title and the blue colour. Short closed tear to margin at right centre just reaching printed border. Section of right border below centrefold (just outside the printed line) removed for binding has been replaced with matching paper.
