Lithograph printed map showing the town of Bizerte on the north coast of Tunisia with lakes Bizerte and Ichkeul.
Surveyed by Thomas Graves (1802-1856), Royal Navy officer and naturalist, Member of the Belfast Natural History Society and Associate of the Royal Geographical Society.
Born in Belfast, Graves entered the Navy in 1816. In 1827 he was promoted to lieutenant on HMS Adventurer under the command of Philip Parker King, surveying in South America.  Survey work in the Mediterranean began in 1836 under his own command on HMS Mastiff and in 1841 on HMS Beacon. As well as surveying and natural history Graves recorded and surveyed many historical sites around the Mediterranean. He died in Malta from a wound inflicted by a Maltese boatman on 18th August 1856.
