A View of RICHMOND PALACE fronting the Green, as built by King Henry VII.th
From an Original Painting in the Possession of Lord Visc.t Fitzwilliam at Richmond.
Sumptibus Societatis Antiquariorum Londini MDCCLXV.
Published according to Act of Parliament. Dec.30.1765 | J.Basire Sculp.
Large copper engraved view by James Basire (1730-1802), London engraver and copperplate printer appointed engraver to the Society of Antiquaries in 1759 and to the Royal Society in 1770.
The engraving is titled Richmond Palace but is almost certainly a depiction of Nonsuch Palace, a Tudor palace built by Henry VIII near Cheam in Surrey, probably after a painting by Hendrick Dankerts (c.1626-1680).
To add to the confusion, later engravings derived from this image have been incorrectly attributed to Theobalds Palace in Hertfordshire.
Light spotting to paper edges but with large margins it remains a fine example in good later hand colour of a rare engraving.
