Rocher de Gayette lequel se fendit en deux lors de la passion de Notre Seigneur
Gravé par Israel Silvestre
P. Mariette ex Avec privil. du Roy.

Etching by Israel Sylvestre (1621-1691) plate 9 from a series of 12 published in Vues d'Italie. by Pierre Marsette, Paris 1640-1660.

Born in Nancy in 1621, Sylvestre made several trips to Italy from about 1640 to 1653, producing a large number of fine etchings.

Unlike most of the etchings by Sylvestre, which show detailed scenes from his travels in Italy, this plate depicts a local religious story of a cliff split in two during the Lord's Passion.

Contemporary manuscript notation lower right margin; No9/60

Very good condition.
