CAMBRIDGE SHIRE
Drawn from the best Surveys & Maps Corrected from Aston
l Observns. By T.Kitchin G.

Engraved by Thomas Kitchin for publication in The London Magazine by Richard Baldwin. The magazine was published monthly between 1st May 1732 and 1st July 1783, the county maps appearing at irregular intervals between 1747 and 1763, Cambridgeshire appearing in the issue for December 1750. Ten of the maps were issued in England Displayed…London, S. Bladon, et.al. 1769. The complete series were re-issued under various titles including Boswell's Antiquities by Alexander Hogg from 1786 to 1798.

Thomas Kitchin (1719-1784), one of the foremost engravers of his time, was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732 and married his daughter, Sarah, at the end of his apprenticeship in 1739. Their son, Thomas Bowen Kitchin, was born about 1740 and was later apprenticed to his father. Thomas Kitchin retired to St Albans about 1776 and his business was taken over by his son. He died at St Albans on 23rd June 1784, leaving all his goods and chattels to his “dear and loving wife”.

This example of the map of Cambridgeshire is from a publication by Alexander Hogg in later hand colour. Waterstain upper left corner and a discolouration to the paper, probably in manufacture, to lower right margin.
