RARE LITHOGRAPH EDITION OF PINNOCK'S WOOD ENGRAVED MAPS
SUFFOLK
Lithographic transfer published in Johnson's Atlas of England in 1847 from a wood engraved map by Joshua Archer (1792?-1863) first published in weekly parts in The Guide to Knowledge edited by W Pinnock...London: W.Edwards 1833-34.
The original pubication employed an unusual printing method resulting in white lines on a black ground. This later edition, printed more conventionally by lithographic transfer from the woodblocks and hand coloured, was published in Johnson's Atlas of England in 1847 & 1863. The 1863 edition is exceedingly rare with only a few copies known and were a re-issue of the 1847 stock with the title page date of 1847 erased by hand and overprinted 1863. The maps were not updated to show the rapid developments in the railway network since 1833 and were therefore noticeably out of date by 1847. The work was not popular and examples from this publication are rare.
Very good example of a rare map in original hand colour.
