Farleigh Castle, Hungerford, was the likely inspiration for Jane Austin's novel, Northanger Abbey.
Hand coloured copper engraving by James Sargant Storer from a drawing by Samuel Prout (1782-1852), born at Plymouth, the fourth of fourteen children of Samuel Prout, naval outfitter, and Mary Cater. He established his reputation as a painter with street scenes on his visit to the continent in 1818 and was appointed 'Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary' to King George IV in 1829 and later to Queen Victoria.
The engraver, James Sargant Storer (1771-1853) artist, draughtsman and engraver, was born in London, the son of Robert Storer, watch and clockmaker, and his wife Sarah. He collaborated with John Greig on a series of antiquarian and topographical works. He retired by 1841, and is recorded in 1851 living in Islington with three children, a domestic servant and a nurse.
