George Montagu, 4th Duke of Manchester commenced construction of the house on the north side of the square, a new development which was to be named after him, in 1776. Manchester house was completed in 1788, shortly before George Monatgue's death, and the house was purchased by the Spanish Government as their embassy. In 1797 The 2nd Marquis of Hertford purchased the lease and renamed the house, Hertford House. The house passed to the 3rd and the 4th Marquis of Hertford who was a collector of art, furniture and china etc., building a large collection. Unmarried and without children, on his death in 1870 he left his entore collection to his friend and fellow collector Sir Richard Wallace. Wallace made a number of alterations to the house extending it to house the combined collections known as the Wallace Collectionwhich he bequeathed to to the Nation and which remains in Hertford House today.
