SCARCE FOLDING MAP. FIRST ISSUE.

Thomas Dix (c.1769-1813) worked as a surveyor in Norfolk. In 1805 he published A treatise on the construction and copying of all kinds of maps. He is not known for the production of any other series of county maps, this series closely copied from the maps by Robert Rowe of 1812. The maps are finely engraved with decorative vignettes and first appeared in atlas form in A complete atlas of the English counties... Commenced by the Late Thomas Dix of North Walsham; carried on and completed by William Darton, London. in 1822. Maps of some counties are recorded with various dates published as loose sheet folding maps, this example of the map of Derbyshire on of these first loose sheet issues with the dated imprint of 1818. The imprint is concealed by the ribbon border but is visible when held up to the light.

A very good example of a scarce map from the first issue, segmented (20 sections) and pasted on linen with linen tape edges in original hand colour. Old ink signature and doodle (fleur de lis) verso. No slipcase.
