Double page wood engraving by Samuel Read published in an extra supplement to The Illustrated London News  for September 20th 1873.
Samuel Read (1815-1883) was born 20th December 1815 at Needham Market, the son of Robert Read, boot and shoemaker. He studied wood engraving under Josiah Wood Whymper, father of Edward Whymper. He also studied under watercolourist William Collingwood Smith and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1843. In 1844 he began contributing to The Illustrated London News and as the first artist special correspondent, in 1853 was sent to cover the war in Crimea. He died at Sidmouth on 6th May 1883. Three of his drawings are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Blank verso. Two felt pen marks show through partially on the image. Centre fold as issued and two additional vertical folds possibly as issued. Good later hand color. An attractive large engraving by a noted artist.
