TOTTENHAM HIGH CROSS.
Drawn by Ellis & Engraved by Haydon. | For D.r Hughson's Description of London.
Published by J.Robins & C.o Albion Press, Ivy Lane, London.
Published in a parts issue work London; Being an Accurate History and Description of the Metropolis and its Neighbourhood...by Dr. David Hughson...London 1805-1809.
David Hughson was the pen name for Edwrad Pugh.
Tottenham High Cross was erected between 1600 and 1609 on the site of a wooden wayside cross described in 1409 marking the centre of Tottenham village. Built of plain brick it was stuccoed and ornamented in 1809 just after this engraving was made. There appears to be a man with a camera obscura set up in the foreground - a device possibly used by the artist, Ellis, for the sketch for this engraving.
