Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766), grandson of the "father of French cartography", Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) and father of Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), with whom he composed their most famous work Atlas Universel in 1757.
Charles-Francois Delamarche (1740-1817), originally a lawyer in Paris, obtained the map stock of the de Vaugondy family in 1786 and established himself as a geographer and "Roberts successor de Vaugondy", amending, re-engraving and republishing de Vaugondy plates.
