QUEEN ELIZABETH'S OAK IN HATFIELD-PARK.
Woodblock engraving published in The Illustrated London News for Oct.31.1846.
This oak tree, in the grounds of Hatfield House is reputed to be the tree under which Elizabeth was sitting when she was brought news of the death of her half-sister Mary and that she had become queen. The tree is now gone and a new oak planted by Queen Elizabeth II on 22nd Juy 1985 stands in its place.
