This copperplate engraving, after a sketch by George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862), was produced for publication in The Beauties of England and Wales in 1812 and is normally found with the title; HIGH SREET, St Albans, Herts. with the imprint below; London: Published by John Harris, S.t Pauls Church Yard, Oct.1.1812. and the signature below the engraving; Engraved from a drawing by G. Shepherd for the Beauties of England and Wales. It is likely that this plate was produced as a proof copy prior to publication.

A very interesting view depicting the semaphore station on the top of the Clock Tower which was used during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) to comunicate with Yarmouth on the South Coast. Also shown is the large wheel for the Braithwaite water pump in the market square.

Paper edges window mounted to heavier paper without affecting the print. A very good example of an early proof copy in neat later hand colour.
