A DISTORTED MAP WITH LIST OF MARKET TOWNS

A Map of HERTFORDSHIRE

The Small English atlas was first issued in twelve weekly parts from November 1748, the first complete edition published in 1749. The maps are similar in style to the more common Badeslade & Toms Series of 1741/42 but have a list of towns below the map rather than to one side and the maps are consistently engraved with north to the top of the page. The early issues published by Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jefferys in 1749 and 1751 had the list of towns engraved in a seemingly random order and were re-engraved alphabetically for the issues published by Robert Sayer from 1775 to 1787 with a final re-issue by Laurie & Whittle in 1794.

This example of the map of Hertfordshire is the final state of the plate with the list of towns re-engraved alphabetically with Sawbridgeworth an addition at the end of the list, published from 1775 to 1794. The colouring is by a later hand.
Good condition without centrefold.
