The engraving is closely based on an ink line and wash drawing by Francis Grose held in the British Library dated 1756. The sketch was not used for his topographical work Antiquities of England and Wales.
Gate to Stratford Langthorne Abbey also known as Westham Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1135 in Stratford. Nothing now remains of the Abbey, this gate in Bakers Row, survived until 1825.
