James Walis, born in Southampton in 1784, was apprenticed to engraver and copperplate printer John Roper (1771-1810) on 7th May 1799. Trading from 77 Berwick Street, Soho, his engraving carreer was relatively short-lived, becoming a commission and discount agent and imprisoned for debt in 1835. He is recorded on the 1841 Census as a stationer, living with his wife Elizabeth and three children. By 1851 he was a widower dealing in wine and beer with his son, also James. 
James Wallis can be confused with contemporaries James Wallis (fl.1787-1807), bookseller of Ivy Lane and Paternoster Row and an engraver and jeweller of Fleet Street made bankrupt in 1810. He is also not to be confused with John Wallis (c.1745-1818), publisher, bookseller, mapseller, printseller and dissected map maker.
