Scarborough from the Sea.
London: J.& E. Harwood, 26, Fenchurch Street.
E Roberts.
Produced by J & F Harwood, stationers, booksellers, publishers, printers, bookbinders and engravers with premises in Fenchurch Street. They produced headed notelets, sheets of paper with engraved views of resorts at the top of the page - a precursor to the Victorian postcard. The views were also published in bound sets intended for the tourist under various titles headed Harwood's Views...
John Harwood (1798-1855) began trading from Fenchurch Street in 1822 and Frederick Harwood (1801?-1861) possibly a cousin, joined him as partner in 1830. The firm was declared bankrupt July 1843 and the partnership ended January 1844. The bankruptcy was annulled and John Harwood continued trading succesfully until his death on 1st June 1855.
The artist for this engraving was Edward John Roberts (1797-1865).
Laid on card. Hand coloured. Uncommon. Good quality steel engraving.
