TAIL PIECE. THE BATHOS, or Manner of Sinking in Sublime Paintings, inscribed to the Dealers in Dark Pictures.
Design'd and Engraved by W.m Hogarth. | Publishd according to Act of Parliam.t March 3.d 1764.
Intended as the tail piece for a bound edition of his engravings, Hogarth's last engraving, can be seen as a momento mori, depicting Father Time lying exhausted and dying while all around is broken and decaying, was completed a few months before his death on October 25th 1764.
From The Works of William Hogarth published in 1822 known as The Heath edition, the last to use the original Hogarth plates.
Water stain to the top right corner of the paper not affecting the plate area.
