Woodblock engraving by Joshua Archer pubished by W. Edwards in The Guide to Knowledge edited by W. Pinnock from 1833. The woodblock was inked with a roller wiothout working the ink into the engraved cuts thereby printing with a white line on a black ground.
Sir John Ross (1777-1856) and his nephew Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862) were polar pioneers and made great advances in exploring and charting polar regions in the search for a Northwest Passage.
