Steel line and stipple engraving by Samuel Freeman (1773-1857) after a painting by James Lonsdale (1777-1839) showing William Roscoe (1753-1831), English banker, lawyer and member of Parliament, best known as one of England's first abolitionists. He was also known as a historian, art collector , botanist and writer.
Samuel Freeman (1773-1857) worked mainly as a stipple engraver specialising in portraits.
James Lonsdale was a prolific English portrait painter, exhibiting 138 works at the Royal Academy between 1802 and 1838. He was one of the founders of The Society of British Artists.
