James Manby Gully (1808-1883). Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he was taken to Engand at the age of 6. He became a medical doctor and was known for practising hydrptherapy and, with James Wilson, set up a clinic in Malvern using Malvern water. With famous patients including Charles Darwin, Charles Diclkens, Thomas Carlsile, Florence Nightingale, Lord Tennyson and Samuel Wilberforce the fame of his clinic and the quality of the waters is largely responsible for Malvern's rapid development from village to large town.
