FRIENDSHIP. | A principal Beard. | THE ELDER SHALL SERVE THE YOUNGER
ETCHING BY JOHN KAY DATED 1793.
The title plays on the name of the clean shaven gentleman on the left, Dr. Baird, being welcomed to his appointment to the Principality of the University of Edinburgh in 1793 by the bearded Provost Elder. Dr Baird married a daughter of Provost Elder who aided his appointment - hence the title of the etching.
