James Gillespie, Esq. of Spylaw, and his brother Mr John Gillespie.
James Gillespie is on the left, his brother John, on the right.
James Gillespie (1726-1797) born in Roslin, Midlothian 28th April 1726. Scottish snuff and tobacco merchant in Edinburgh and became one of Edinburghs wealthest men. On his death left a request that a hospital and school should be built. The school, founded in 1803, still exists in Marchmont, Edinburgh.
