The unusual printing method whereby the engraved woodblock was inked with a roller without working the ink into the engraved cuts resulting in a white line on a black ground, was a technique suited to celestial charts where stars appear bright against the black background.
William Pinnock (1782-1843) British publisher and educational writer, started as a schoolmaster and bookseller, and from 1817, in partnership with Samuel Maunder in London, began publishing inexpensive educational works.
