SEE : DAN TO VAUX : ALL. | and back again.
by 'HB' (John Doyle), lithograph printed by Alfred Ducote, published by Thomas McLean, 29th August 1835.
Speech bubbles read: "I say Dan, this is tough work, I hope their honors won't forget." "I am sure they ought to be grateful to us ar'n't they entirely depidint upon us, and couldn't we leave them nicely in the dirt this blessed moment, if we liked."
The figures represented carrying the sedan chair are Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham & Vaux, and Mr Daniel O'Connell, MP for Dublin City and Cork County. In the chair are John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, and William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, Prime Minister.
The political point of the cartoon is that the government are being carried by Lord Brougham and Mr. O'Connell. In the House of Lords Lord Brougham was considered as more active and influential than the Prime Minister and in the House of Commons, Mr O'Connell more hard working than Lord John Russell.
Hand coloured lithograph, some spotting, browning to edges and with pasted ct-out from accompanying text description.
