Four sheets printed from the engraved copperplate, hand coloured, segmented and pasted on linen. From the Six Inch scale county maps carried out 1841-1855, Yorkshire 1844-53. Only two English counties, Yorkshire and Lancashire, and seven Scottish counties, were surveyed and published at this scale. In 1854 the scale 1:2500 was adopted for cultivated areas. The first maps at this 6" scale were engraved on copper and intaglio printed showing very fine detail. They were issued on sheets 3ft x 2ft (about 91.5cm x 61cm) but from 1882 the new sheets of England & Wales were published by less detailed photo-reduction on quarter sheets 18 x 12 inches (46 x 30.5cm).

This map extends from Hebden Bridge in the north-west to Huddersfield in the south-east and includes Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, Hipperholme, Brighouse, Ripponden, Greetland, Elland.

Segmented in 60 sections 16x26cm. Brown cloth covers, worn.
Some tape reinforcement to joints verso but the map is generally clean and undamaged and is a very good example of the early six inch scale copper engraved maps in full original hand colour from the Ordnance Survey.
