Sir John Murray (1841-1914) was a pioneering British oceanographer, marine biologist and limnologist. The Challenger expedition was an epic voyage lasting nearly three and a half years covering 69.00 miles and gathered information on the world's oceans, seafloor and marine life. The H.M.S. Challenger sailed from Portsmouth on December 21st 1872, returning in 1876 with only 144 of the original crew of 216.
