John Amos Comenius
John Amos Comenius c. 1655
Comenius (1592-1670) Czech teacher, educator and writer. Served as the last Bishop of Unity of the Brethren and became a religious refugee. One of the earliest champions of universal education. Considered father of modern education. Hailed as the inventor of textbooks and primers. Comenius Medal, a UNESCO award honouring outstanding achievements in the fields of education, research and innovation, commemorates Comenius.
