We have recently listed a very scarce and important map of Hertfordshire by John Seller.
Based on the third survey of the county (after Christopher Saxton in 1577 and John Norden in 1598) carried out by John Oliver, this map became the basis for most printed maps of Hertfordshire until the next original survey by Warburton in about 1724.
The Hertfordshire map was the first of a proposed set of English counties but, unfortunately, the scheme foundered after the completion of only five more counties; Middlesex, Surrey, Kent, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
